IELTS Next IELTS Academic vs General Training: which one do you actually need?
Listening and Speaking are identical. Reading and Writing Task 1 are not — and neither are the score scales. Here is how to choose correctly the first time, route by route.
The short answer
Studying → Academic. Migrating for work → usually General Training. Professional registration → usually Academic. The two tests share most of their content: Listening and Speaking are identical. Only Reading and Writing Task 1 differ. But the certificate is not interchangeable — book the wrong one and the receiving organisation will simply reject it, however good the score.
The accepting organisation decides which test you need, not you. Two minutes on their requirements page saves a wasted test fee. When a route is ambiguous (some employers, some visa subclasses), ask them directly.

Is General Training easier?
The texts are easier; the certificate is not. Three honest observations from the conversion tables:
- For Reading Band 7.0, GT demands roughly four to five more correct answers than Academic. The easier passages are priced into the scale.
- Writing letters is not free marks. GT Task 1 punishes tone errors hard — an informal letter to a manager or a stiff formal letter to a friend caps Task Achievement. Academic Task 1 has no tone risk; it has data-accuracy risk instead.
- Candidates switching from Academic practice to a GT booking routinely overestimate their Reading band because they score practice tests on the wrong scale. Score GT practice on the GT column — see the band scores guide.
Switching between tests
Scores from one test cannot be converted to the other, and a One Skill Retake stays within the test you originally sat. If your plans change — say, a work migration turns into a study offer — you sit the other test in full. Prepare accordingly: if there is any chance you will need Academic later, practising Academic Reading from the start costs little and keeps the option open.

Which is easier, IELTS Academic or General Training?
GT has easier Reading texts but a stricter conversion — Band 7.0 needs about 34–35 of 40 on GT versus about 30 on Academic. Writing differs in kind, not difficulty: GT letters punish tone mistakes, Academic reports punish data errors. Overall difficulty is closer than the texts suggest.
Can I use an Academic score where General Training is required?
Usually not — Canadian economic immigration, for instance, requires GT specifically. Some organisations accept either; the accepting body's requirements page is the only answer that counts.
Are Listening and Speaking the same in both tests?
Yes, completely identical — same recordings, same interview, same scoring. Only Reading and Writing Task 1 differ between the two tests.
Do Academic and GT cost the same?
Fees are set per test centre and are typically the same for both tests at a given centre. Check your local centre's booking page for the exact fee.
Which IELTS do I need for Canada?
General Training for economic immigration (Express Entry, most PNPs). Academic for studying at a Canadian university or for nursing registration. If you might do both, note the scores cannot be transferred between tests.
